The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) was formed on 1 January 2004 as a result of the merger between the University of Durban-Westville and the University of Natal. The new university brought together the rich histories of both former universities which encompass disadvantage and advantage respectively. The two KwaZulu-Natal universities were among the first set of institutions to be merged in 2004 as part of government’s reform aimed at reconfiguring and restructuring higher education. The resulting merged institution is a large and complex contact university. UKZN Durban and Pietermaritzburg campus have both supported the DFL Festival and DFL Lover + Another Poetry Challenge. The Pietermaritzburg drama department was paramount to DFL Lover + Another in the past three years.

Moi University is located in Eldoret, 310 kilometres northwest of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. It was established as the second university in Kenya by an act of parliament, the Moi University Act of 1984.
The first cohort of 83 students was admitted in 1984 through a transfer from the Department of Forestry, University of Nairobi. Since then, the university has experienced phenomenal growth from its initial faculty in 1984, to 13 schools, four directorates and one institute in 2012.

Established in 1922 as a humble technical school, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Africa. In January of that year, the school, which was later renamed Uganda Technical College, opened its doors to 14 day students who began studying Carpentry, Building and Mechanics.
The college soon began offering various other courses in Medical Care, Agriculture , Veterinary Sciences and Teacher Training. It expanded over the years to become a center for higher education in East Africa in 1935. In 1937, the college started developing into an institution of higher education, offering post-school certificate courses.

The Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (Eduardo Mondlane University) is the oldest and largest university in Mozambique.
The Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) is located in Maputo and has about 8 000 full-time students. The university is divided in 14 faculties. The institution was set up as a center for higher education in 1962 in what was then Lourenço Marques, the capital of Portugal's overseas province of Mozambique. Founded by the then Overseas Minister Adriano Moreira, it was called Estudos Gerais Universitários de Moçambique (Mozambique General University Studies) after Studium Generale; in 1968 it became the Universidade de Lourenço Marques (University of Lourenço Marques).
After Mozambique became independent in 1975, the city was renamed Maputo and the university was renamed in honour of Frelimo leader Eduardo Mondlane in 1976.
