My first steps with Drama for Life

Six months ago to the day I discovered the opportunity in myself to change. On the first of September 2008, Spring day as well as the beginning of the Jewish month Elul, I pushed myself into the processes of healing out of a depression. With my background in Performance and Psychology I knew that change had to come from me in an expressive way. So I went online to look for performance opportunities.

That night I found a platform to sing at the Radium Beer Hall and I planted the seed for transformation. A month later, having been inspired, I stumbled upon the chance to audition for a Playback Theatre production that happened to be a DFL Master’s project. I went to the audition, got accepted and discovered the healing function theatre can have on an individual and as just as quickly, I discovered a community. We were all asked what we wanted to achieve through the company. I wanted to achieve balance through finding a path towards my career while fusing my love for Psychology and Performance.

After several rehearsals I went to the DFL conference and attended several workshops. I was especially moved by the Drama-Therapy workshop and decided that day that that was what I wanted to do. Soon after, I applied to do my Honours with the Drama the Life programme, and, in what seems like a whirlwind, I was accepted. Towards the end of the year the Playback Production did reflections and it was then that I discovered the healing function it had on me.

Now we are in the throws of doing more productions and I can’t help but feel extremely blessed to have had the opportunity to be apart of the process. We are in the process of putting on more productions and I feel like it is all surreal. My path has been paved and the first steps have been taken. The healing has begun and my wish now is for it to permeate to all who need it.
