Film+School @ DFL Sex Actually 2011

The Bioscope FILM+SCHOOL Series is a film awareness and appreciation initiative by the Bioscope Independent Cinema in partnership with the Goethe-Institut South Africa. The central aims of the initiative are to introduce young learners to the art of filmmaking, to spark interest in a wide range of topics and to encourage discussion.

PROGRAMMING
Film is a powerful educational tool and the programming of the series has been designed to be as broad as possible to allow children an opportunity to engage in wide range of filmic genres and structures including fiction, documentaries and short and animated films. Through this programming strategy, learners will become familiar with the different modes of storytelling of the medium.

DISCUSSIONS
Using the films as a starting point, the screenings will involve discussions with the learners, encouraging athem to interrogate both the subject matter raised in the films and the way in which the movie has been produced.

2011 AUGUST/SEPTEMBER FILM+SCHOOL PROGRAMME
The FILM+SCHOOL series aims to engage learners on issues around sexuality, HIV & AIDS and gender.

“Talking about sex isn’t easy” and the fourth installment of the FILM+SCHOOL film education project will aim to explore issues around HIV & AIDS and sexuality through both cinema, facilitated discussion and for the first time, theatre! The programme contains a selection of award-wining local and international films which are all accessible to learners and will encourage a good understanding of these often-difficult topics. Through these films it will be possible to break down the many social barriers that exist in tackling topics of HIV and AIDS, gender, sexuality and race.

The Film+School project will form part of the DFL Sex Actually Festival. This annual festival which began in 2008 and is staged at Wits University, uses theatre, dance and film to encourage open discussion around issues of sexuality. For the first time since the beginning of Film+School, theatre will be incorporated into the learning process with the final screening to be a special theatrical performance by the Drama For Life Playback Theatre Company.

The Film+School project for this series is a partnership between The Bioscope Independent Cinema, the Goethe Institut and Drama for Life.
