Drama for Life Festival - Changing the Face of HIV/Aids; Changing our Consciousness
Drama for Life, a holistic arts programme hosted by the Division of Dramatic Art at The University of Witwatersrand (Wits), brings to you the much anticipated arts festival, ‘Changing the Face of HIV/Aids; changing our consciousness’; running from August 20 - September 5.
This year’s theme focuses on renewed efforts in finding creative and sustainable ways of learning and building capacity in HIV and AIDS education and prevention.
Warren Nebe, Head of Dramatic Art Division at Wits University, says: “It is about changing a continent’s consciousness about HIV and AIDS, seeking to inspire communitas through personal and interpersonal learning through the arts in Africa; introducing contemporary processes while paying respect to the rich indigenous knowledges that belong to Africa.”
This highly interactive and informative festival will see a meeting of artists, researchers, development workers, trainers, theatre, music, art, dance and health practitioners from all sectors of the community engaging in dialogue, networking, learning and sharing.
An array of exciting and stimulating workshops, seminars and exhibitions is planned and will allow opportunities for participants to fully explore themes relating to HIV and AIDS in an honest, supportive and caring environment.
The festival which seeks to be all inclusive and accessible will hold performances and workshops at various venues including Wits University, Museum Africa and Ipelegeng Community Centre in Soweto.
The Drama for Life Festival works with the Not Alone Exhibition at Museum Africa, the 969 Festival and Arts Alive ’09. The Drama for Life Festival also partners with PJ Sabbagha’s “When Life Happens” Festival, Wits CCDU, SLDU and Transformation Office, and SATI.
The Drama for Life Festival is made possible by the generous support of GTZ, Goethe-Institut, DED, NRF and Wits School of the Arts.
