The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (Pepfar) was launched in 2003 by then-United States’ president, George W. Bush. The programme initially aimed to provide antiretroviral treatment (ART) to 2-million HIV-infected people in resource-limited settings, to prevent 7-million new infections and to provide support and care for 10-million people (the “2–7–10 goals”) by 2010. The Pepfar programme has been called the largest health initiative ever initiated by one country to address a disease. The response to Pepfar has been largely positive. The massive funding increases have made anti-retrovirals widely available, saving millions of lives. A 2009 study found that the programme had reduced the death rate due to AIDS in the countries involved by 10%. Drama for Life (DFL) partners with Pepfar through the University of California’s Art Global Health Center’s Make Art Stop Aids Project, which is under the leadership of Professor David Gere. Drama for Life’s partnership with Pepfar makes it possible to take the Drama for Life Festival to other communities outside Johannesburg in 2010. The DFL festivals will be held in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
