Dfl Mvuso: Mature, Vibrant and Inspired at age 8!

With the 2019 intake of Drama for Life’s The Mvuso Schools and Community Education Project, we celebrate 8 cycles of training teachers and artists in Applied Drama and Theatre methodologies. The application of these acquired tools in engagement with adolescent learners across Johannesburg schools has resulted in widespread reach, and interest beyond Gauteng and national borders.

Established school teachers, registered with SACE, and community artists come together for intensive training in an integrated, sophisticated teaching and learning process developed by Drama for Life. These processes serve to enhance the psycho-social support teachers and artists need when working with youth, and they serve to inspire creative, healthy ways of making artistic work with, for and about youth.

The impressive life of this project has been made possible through the work of a committed and highly skilled team of visionary dreamers, project managers and trainer-facilitators, as well as invaluable partnerships with Wits University, Rand Merchant Bank, The Gauteng Department of Education (Central District), The Department of Sports Culture and Recreation, The Goethe Institut and innumerable colleagues and practitioners in social and transformative work.

Drama for Life is an award-winning, internationally recognised department for applied arts, arts therapies and arts research based at the Wits School of Arts, University of the Witwatersrand. The department is dedicated to social transformation and healing through the arts. It boasts a comprehensive post-graduate degree and diploma programme, a short course programme, two professional theatre companies, and several local, national and international projects.
