The Drama for Life School and Community Education Project, Mvuso is one of Drama for Life’s flagship projects, with great success in fostering collaboration between teachers and community artists in the face of extraordinary psychosocial challenges. The project has trained over 300 teachers and community artists who have collectively worked with hundreds of adolescents throughout its 8th year run. We have seen adolescents grow in confidence by being given the opportunity to voice their opinion whilst working alongside their peers and facilitators in dynamic, negotiated and transformative ways. The project has received a Service Excellence award from the Gauteng Department of Education.

The project brings together a group of practicing artists and school educators from selected secondary schools in Johannesburg to receive a one-week intensive short course training in introductory Applied Theatre and Drama methodologies with Drama for Life, Wits University. This project offers trainee- participants the opportunity to put their newly acquired skills to the test by creating dynamic and exciting representations of contemporary social issues with young adolescents. This process culminates in the creation of a platform for young people to share and witness narratives by and about their current lived realities.

The success of the project led to the introduction of an advanced level training which is now in its 4th year running. The advanced training is open to teachers and community artists who have completed the introductory training. This level of training deepens the understanding of the methodologies introduced to participants at first level.

This ground-breaking and unique project would not be possible without the generous support of Rand Merchant Bank, Goethe Institut, Department of Education Johannesburg Central and the Department of Sports and Recreation Region C.

The Mvuso Community show day is open for everyone to come share and witness the 15 minute performance pieces that come out of the collaborative process between the teachers and adolescents during the implementation phase of the project.
